Ramadan is a significant month observed by millions of Muslims worldwide, including a large portion of Dubai’s population. The UAE has a Muslim-majority population, with approximately 75% of Dubai’s residents being Muslim, making Ramadan an important time in the city’s cultural and religious calendar.

Ramadan is anticipated to begin on the evening of Friday, February 28, 2025, with the first day of fasting on Saturday, March 1, 2025. The exact start date depends on the sighting of the crescent moon and may vary. Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, is expected on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Public Sector Working Hours

The UAE’s Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has announced adjusted working hours for public sector employees during Ramadan 2025. Government ministries and federal entities will operate from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Fridays. These reduced hours aim to accommodate the spiritual and physical needs of employees observing the fast.

Private Sector Working Hours

The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) mandates reduced working hours for private sector employees during Ramadan. In 2025, private sector employees will be entitled to work two hours less than their usual daily schedule. Companies may implement flexible or remote working arrangements, depending on their operational requirements. Employees should refer to their employers for specific work schedules during Ramadan.

Dubai Metro and Tram Schedules

During Ramadan, public transportation schedules often undergo modifications to align with the altered routines of residents and visitors. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the following metro and tram timings for Ramadan 2025:

  • Dubai Metro Timings Red and Green Line Stations:

    • Monday to Thursday: 5:00 AM – 12:00 AM (Midnight)

    • Friday: 5:00 AM – 1:00 AM (Next Day)

    • Saturday: 5:00 AM – 12:00 AM (Midnight)

    • Sunday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 AM (Midnight)

  • Dubai Tram Timings:

    • Monday to Saturday: 6:00 AM – 1:00 AM (Next Day)

    • Sunday: 9:00 AM – 1:00 AM (Next Day)

Commuters are advised to check the RTA website closer to Ramadan for any further updates.

Salik Toll System

Starting from the first day of Ramadan, Salik will implement special toll rates for the holy month as follows:

  • Peak hours (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM): AED 6 per crossing.

  • Off-peak hours (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 2:00 AM): AED 4 per crossing.

  • Late-night hours (2:00 AM – 7:00 AM): No charges.

There will be no changes in the toll calculation for crossings at Al Safa North, Al Safa South, Al Mamzar North, and Al Mamzar South gates in the same direction within one hour. The toll will be charged only once during this period.

Public Schools

All public school students in the UAE will have distance learning on Fridays to encourage children to spend more time with family. Educational institutions in Dubai, including public schools, often adjust their schedules during Ramadan to accommodate fasting students and staff. While the exact timings for 2025 have yet to be announced, schools typically start later in the morning and finish earlier in the afternoon. Parents and guardians should await official communications from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) for specific details regarding school hours during Ramadan.

Iftar Cannons

A cherished tradition in Dubai is the firing of iftar cannons to signal the end of the daily fast. Dubai Police have announced the return of the beloved Ramadan Iftar cannons, ensuring the tradition reaches every corner of the emirate. This year, eight fixed cannons will be stationed at iconic locations across Dubai, while a mobile cannon will travel to 17 different areas.

The eight fixed cannons will be placed at:

  • Expo City Dubai

  • Damac Hills

  • Uptown Mirdif

  • Burj Khalifa

  • Wasl Properties

  • Hatta Fort Hotel

  • Salt Camp (Kite Beach)

  • Al Khawaneej Majlis

Additionally, a mobile cannon will visit 17 locations, including Meydan Hotel, Grand Sattwa Mosque, Zabeel Park, and Jumeirah, ensuring widespread participation in the tradition.

Eid al-Fitr 2025

Eid al-Fitr marks the conclusion of Ramadan and is a time of celebration and communal prayers. In 2025, Eid al-Fitr is expected to fall on Sunday, March 30, subject to the official moon sighting. Public sector employees typically receive a multi-day holiday, with exact dates to be confirmed by government authorities. During Eid, the RTA often offers free parking across Dubai and may adjust public transportation schedules to accommodate increased travel. Additionally, special events and festivities are organized throughout the city to celebrate the occasion.
